Uga Bay is a five-star beach resort on the shallow bay at Pasikudah on Sri Lanka's east coast, with studios, plunge-pool suites and two-storey beach villas. Now marketed as The Bay, an Uga Experience, its main pavilion, with tall tiled gables and a round moon gate, looks down a long reflecting pool, and the rooms are spread through palm-fringed gardens beside the calm waters of Pasikudah.
Every room has air conditioning and a ceiling fan, free Wi-Fi, a flat-screen television, a minibar, a safe, tea and coffee facilities and 24-hour in-room dining, and every bathroom has a walk-in shower and his-and-hers vanities. The names below are the ones you will see when you choose a room.
Choose a Beach Studio to step straight out towards the sand, an Ocean Studio for a higher, quieter outlook, and a Bay Suite or Beach Villa for families or two couples travelling together.
The resort sits on the bay at Passikudah Beach, where the water stays shallow and calm a long way out, which makes it good for swimming, snorkelling and paddling with children. Kalkudah Beach is about 1.4 kilometres away. The resort arranges snorkelling, scuba diving, sailing, kayaking, windsurfing and jet skiing.
There is an infinity pool with a bar beside it, an all-day restaurant and private dining that can be set up for special occasions. The underground spa offers Balinese treatments with views of the ocean. The resort also hosts weddings and honeymoons.
Batticaloa is about 35 kilometres to the south, with its old Dutch fort, its market and lighthouse, and the wide Batticaloa Lagoon. The resort also runs day tours inland to the ancient city of Polonnaruwa. Trains on the Batticaloa Line stop at nearby Valachchenei.
Pasikudah is on the opposite side of the island from Bandaranaike International Airport, so allow most of a day by road. The simplest way is a private transfer from Colombo airport to Uga Bay, which takes you all the way to the resort. If you are flying domestically, Batticaloa airport is much closer.
