Villa SriPali is a private, fully staffed villa a short way inland from Aluthgama and Bentota on Sri Lanka's west coast. It is let as a whole house, with its own pool and garden, and suits a family or group travelling together who want space and privacy rather than a hotel, with the beaches and the towns about a five-minute drive away.
The villa is at Kotapitiya in Dharga Town, on the main road from Aluthgama inland to Matugama, but it sits well back from the road behind security gates and a high perimeter wall, so it feels secluded. Aluthgama railway station is about 3 km away, and Bentota railway station about 4 km, with Bentota Beach and the shops and restaurants of Aluthgama and Bentota a five-minute drive or a short tuk-tuk ride from the gate. Colombo lies about 70 km to the north and Galle about 50 km to the south.
From Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) the drive to Dharga Town takes around two hours on the airport and Southern expressways, depending on traffic around Colombo. The simplest way to arrive after a long flight is a private airport transfer booked in advance with Lakpura: an English-speaking driver meets you in the arrivals hall and takes you straight to the villa in an air-conditioned car, van or coach sized for your group, from 2 up to 15 guests, at a fixed price for the whole vehicle rather than per seat. Villa SriPali is a large family house rather than a hotel, with en suite bedrooms furnished in wood, some with air conditioning and some with fans, and sitting areas that give a group room to spread out. It is best suited to parties of about eight to twelve. Outside there is a swimming pool set in the garden, with a barbecue area beside it.
The villa comes with its own small team who clean the house and cook, and meals are served in the dining area or brought to you on request. The cook will prepare food for different diets, including vegetarian and vegan meals. There is also Wi-Fi, free parking, laundry and a library of books and DVDs.
The beach at Bentota and the Bentota River are the main draws, with boat trips through the mangroves and water sports on the river. Geoffrey Bawa's country estate at Lunuganga and his brother Bevis's Brief Garden are both in the countryside inland from Bentota, and the turtle hatcheries of Kosgoda, the mask makers of Ambalangoda and Galle Fort are all within reach for a day out along the coast.
