Villa 80 Bentota is a small, family-run villa property on Elpitiya Road in Bentota, owned and looked after by Henry Payagala. Rather than a hotel of identical rooms, it is a house and its annexes that can be taken in parts or as a whole: a main villa, a poolside apartment and separate rooms, all sharing the pool and the attention of the staff on site.
The villa stands on Elpitiya Road in Bentota, on Sri Lanka's south-west coast, a short way inland from the main coast road. Bentota railway station is about 1.2 km away and Aluthgama station about 1.7 km, and the town sits between Bentota Beach on the ocean side and the Bentota River lagoon on the other, so both the sand and the river are a short tuk-tuk ride away.
Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) is about 110 km from Bentota by road, and the drive usually takes 1.5 to 2 hours on the expressways, depending on traffic around Colombo. The simplest way to arrive after a long flight is a private airport transfer booked in advance with Lakpura: an English-speaking driver meets you in the arrivals hall and takes you straight to the villa in an air-conditioned car, van or coach sized for your group, from 2 up to 15 guests, at a fixed price for the whole vehicle rather than per seat. The same service works in reverse for your departure flight. Book the Colombo (CMB) Airport transfer to Villa 80 Bentota.
The largest unit is the main villa, called Mahagedara, which sleeps up to 12 guests. The Pool Side Apartment takes up to four, and there are also separate Grand Deluxe rooms. Families and groups of up to 16 can book the entire property, which makes it a practical choice for a family gathering or a group travelling together.
Guests share the swimming pool, and the property has free Wi-Fi, a laundry service and daily housekeeping. Meals are cooked on site, there is an open kitchen with tea, coffee and space to prepare baby food, and the staff can set up a barbecue with drinks in the evening. Traditional Sri Lankan Ayurveda oil massages are offered at the villa, with male or female therapists available.
Bentota is known for its long beach and for the river lagoon behind it, where water-skiing, jet skiing, windsurfing and boat trips into the mangroves start. Geoffrey Bawa's country estate at Lunuganga and his brother Bevis's Brief Garden are both within easy reach, and further along the coast are the turtle hatcheries of Kosgoda, the Madu River and Galle Fort. Lakpura can arrange private transfers and day tours to all of these from the villa.
