Milanka TeakVilla is a small guest house of just three rooms at Kaluwamodara in Aluthgama, on the north bank of the Bentota River, where it trades as Teak Villa. It is run by its host, Milanka, whom guests single out for helping with everything from where to shop to what to rent, and the house is built around a garden and an outdoor swimming pool that is open all year.
The villa stands in Kaluwamodara, a quiet residential part of Aluthgama on the south-west coast of Sri Lanka, just north of the Bentota River. Aluthgama railway station, on the coastal line between Colombo and Galle, is about 1.3 km away, and Bentota station about 2.3 km. The Bentota River and its boat jetties are close by, and the beaches of Bentota and Moragalla are a short drive away.
Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) is about 105 km from the villa by road, and the drive around Colombo and down the Southern Expressway usually takes 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on traffic. The easiest way to arrive after a long flight is a private airport transfer booked in advance with Lakpura: an English-speaking driver meets you in the arrivals hall and takes you straight to the villa in an air-conditioned car, van or coach sized for your group, from 2 up to 15 guests, at a fixed price for the whole vehicle rather than per seat. There are only three rooms, each air-conditioned and looking out over either the pool or the garden. Every room has its own private entrance and a sitting area with a flat-screen satellite television, along with a safety deposit box. Free Wi-Fi covers the property.
The outdoor pool is the centre of the house, with the garden around it and barbecue facilities for evenings outside. Guests share a kitchen and a lounge, so this is a place to cook for yourself or eat out in Aluthgama and Bentota rather than a hotel with a restaurant; breakfast is not served. The Bentota River is the main draw, with boat trips through its mangroves and islands and water sports on the lagoon, and Bentota's long beach lies just across the bridge. Kande Viharaya, the temple at Kaluwamodara known for its giant seated Buddha, is in the same neighbourhood. Lunuganga, Geoffrey Bawa's country estate, and Brief Garden, created by his brother Bevis, are both a short drive inland, and further south are the turtle hatcheries of Kosgoda and the Madu River. Lakpura can arrange private transfers and day tours to all of these from the villa.
