Kandula was the war elephant of King Dutugemunu, the ruler who unified the island. This book by Usha Ekanayake gathers together the lesser-known details of that elephant's story, drawing on material that does not usually make it into the familiar retellings.
Alongside the account of Kandula himself, Ekanayake sets out what is known of the Chaddanta line, the high elephant caste to which Kandula is said to have belonged. The two strands together give the reader the animal and the lineage behind him.
The publisher presents it as suitable for schoolchildren, but also for adult readers who enjoy turning up corners of the island's history they had not come across before. The tone is accessible rather than academic.
The text is in Sinhala throughout. Readers without Sinhala will not be able to use it. It is published in Colombo by M. D. Gunasena & Co. (Pvt) Ltd, a long-established Sri Lankan publishing house issuing books in Sinhala and English.
