Bundala National Park sits on the dry southeastern coast of Sri Lanka, a stretch of thorny scrubland and shallow brackish lagoons that has drawn ornithologists and casual travellers alike since it became the country's first Ramsar wetland in 1991. This day tour from Ahangama takes you there by private vehicle for an afternoon jeep safari through one of the island's richest wildlife areas, timed so you spend the heat of the day in the park and are back at your hotel by evening.
The park earns its reputation through sheer variety. Five lagoons of differing salinity anchor the landscape, drawing water birds in numbers that peak during the migratory season, among them the greater flamingo, painted stork, black-necked stork, spoonbill, Eurasian coot, and ducks such as the lesser whistling duck and garganey. Close to 200 bird species have been recorded here, roughly half of them migrants, alongside a resident cast of peafowl, purple swamphen, and hornbill that make themselves just as visible in the scrub and marsh grass. Bundala is also the only park in Sri Lanka where both the mugger and the estuarine crocodile can be seen, and its reptile list runs to tortoises and numerous snakes, including the endemic flying snake. Elephants move through in small herds, and langurs, barking deer, sambar, wild boar, rusty-spotted cats and jackals all have their place in a species count that runs to 324 recorded animals.
The tour itself is built around a fixed rhythm. Your chauffeur collects you from your hotel in Ahangama at 11:00 am and drives you in an air-conditioned vehicle to Bundala, arriving by around 2:00 pm. From there you transfer into a safari jeep with an English-speaking driver who also works as your tracker, for a three-hour safari through the park's scrub, lagoon edges and salt marsh. Afterwards you return to your road vehicle for the drive back, reaching Ahangama by 8:30 pm.
Designation has followed Bundala for decades: a wildlife sanctuary from 1969, it became a national park in 1993, Sri Lanka's first Ramsar site in 1991, and a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 2005. BirdLife International separately recognises it as an Important Bird Area. These labels reflect what you see on the ground rather than replacing it - a working wetland ecosystem where lagoons, mangrove fringes and dry scrub each hold their own residents.
Hotel pickup and drop-off in Ahangama, transport in an air-conditioned vehicle with an English-speaking driver, and the jeep safari inside the park are all part of the arrangement, along with applicable taxes and service charges. Park entrance tickets, food and drinks, and gratuities are not included and should be budgeted separately. The tour is private and suits travellers from age five upward, running across a full day of around seven hours door to door.
