About this experience
Pedal through the hill country above Kandy and arrive at Balana Fortress, a strategic stronghold that shaped Sri Lanka's colonial-era history. Your experienced guide leads the entire cycling route, outfitting you with a mountain bike and helmet before you set off. Along the way you'll ride past terraced slopes and forested ridges, stopping at the battlefield where the notable Battle of Balana was fought — your guide explains the site's military significance and the wider story behind it. A bottle of water per person keeps you going through the four-hour private tour.
The return journey is half the fun: board a scenic third-class train from Balana back to Kandy, watching the highlands roll past the open carriage windows. Mountain bikes, helmets, your guide's fees, the train ticket, and all taxes are covered. Hotel transfers, entrance fees, and meals are not included, so plan accordingly.
