Question 2

Is Sesbania sesban native to Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Sesbania sesban is believed to be native to tropical Africa and parts of Asia, and has naturalised widely across South and Southeast Asia, including Sri Lanka. It grows readily in the island's wet and dry zones, particularly in low-lying, moist environments such as riverbanks and paddy field margins.

Question 3

What does Sesbania sesban look like?

Accepted Answer

Sesbania sesban is a fast-growing shrub or small tree that can reach around six metres in height. It has slender pinnate leaves, yellow flowers marked with purple streaks, and long, narrow seed pods. Its growth form is light and open, making it easy to distinguish from denser tropical vegetation.

Question 4

Can Sesbania sesban be used as a food plant?

Accepted Answer

In some South and Southeast Asian traditions, the flowers and young leaves of Sesbania sesban are consumed as a vegetable. In Sri Lanka, leaves are occasionally cooked during illness as part of traditional dietary practices associated with fever management.
