Question 1

What is Oldenlandia herbacea used for?

Accepted Answer

In Sri Lankan Ayurvedic tradition, Oldenlandia herbacea is used in formulations associated with fever, urinary complaints, and digestive issues. It is typically employed as part of compound herbal preparations rather than as a single-herb remedy. Scientific research into the species remains limited, so traditional applications should be understood in that context.

Question 2

Where does Oldenlandia herbacea grow?

Accepted Answer

The plant grows widely across tropical Asia, including throughout Sri Lanka's dry, intermediate, and wet zones. It favours open, sunny habitats such as roadsides, paddy field margins, and disturbed scrubland, and can be found from sea level up to around 1,500 metres in elevation.

Question 3

What plant family does Oldenlandia herbacea belong to?

Accepted Answer

Oldenlandia herbacea belongs to the family Rubiaceae, a large and ecologically diverse family that also includes coffee and gardenias. Within that family, the genus Oldenlandia encompasses a number of small tropical herbs with medicinal reputations across Asia and Africa.

Question 4

Is Oldenlandia herbacea listed in the Sri Lankan Ayurvedic pharmacopoeia?

Accepted Answer

Yes. It is included in the catalogue of Ayurvedic medicinal plants maintained by Sri Lanka's Department of Ayurveda and is referenced in Lakpura's botanical series under the identifier LK94005866. This formal recognition reflects its established place in the island's traditional medical knowledge.

Question 5

How does Oldenlandia herbacea differ from Oldenlandia diffusa?

Accepted Answer

Both species belong to the genus Oldenlandia (Rubiaceae), but Oldenlandia diffusa has received considerably more scientific attention, particularly in studies exploring potential bioactive compounds such as iridoid glycosides. Oldenlandia herbacea is the species more commonly documented in Sri Lankan Ayurvedic practice, though research specifically into it remains relatively sparse.

Question 6

Can Oldenlandia herbacea be found in Sri Lanka's national parks?

Accepted Answer

Because it prefers open, disturbed, and cultivated environments rather than closed-canopy forest, the plant is not typically associated with Sri Lanka's protected forest reserves. It is more commonly found at the margins of agricultural land, in home gardens, and along roadsides across the island's lowlands and mid-country.

Question 7

What other Ayurvedic herbs are native to Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Sri Lanka's botanical heritage includes a wide range of documented medicinal plants. Among those with established Ayurvedic applications are Acacia chundra, Pongamia pinnata, and many species used in classical compound formulations such as Yogaraja Guggulu and Kaishore Guggulu. The island's diverse climates support one of the richest collections of medicinal flora in the region.
