Question 1

Why is Muthiyanganaya considered a sacred Buddhist site?

Accepted Answer

Muthiyanganaya is one of sixteen Solosmasthana — places in Sri Lanka with a direct legendary connection to the Buddha's three visits to the island. According to the Mahavamsa, a hair relic of the Buddha is enshrined in the main dagoba here. This makes it a significant pilgrimage destination for Theravada Buddhists across Sri Lanka and beyond.

Question 2

Where exactly is Muthiyanganaya located?

Accepted Answer

The temple sits within Badulla town, the provincial capital of Uva Province in south-eastern Sri Lanka. Unlike many ancient sacred sites, it is embedded in an active urban area, making it easy to reach and integrating it into daily town life.

Accepted Answer

By road the journey takes around five to six hours via the central hills route through Kandy. Alternatively, the scenic train journey from Colombo Fort to Badulla is one of the most celebrated rail trips in the country, passing through Ella before arriving at Badulla station, which is close to the temple.

Question 4

Is there an annual festival at Muthiyanganaya?

Accepted Answer

No government entry fee is charged at the temple. Voluntary donations to support the monastery are welcomed but not required. Visitors should dress respectfully and remove footwear before entering shrine areas.

Question 6

What other attractions are near Muthiyanganaya in Uva Province?

Accepted Answer

Horton Plains National Park, famous for World's End and its cloud-forest landscapes, is roughly an hour and a half west of Badulla. The town of Ella with its viewpoints and hiking trails is also nearby, and both make practical additions to a Badulla-based itinerary.

Question 7

How old is Muthiyanganaya temple?

Accepted Answer

The site's origins are traditionally traced to the period before the formal introduction of Buddhism to Sri Lanka in the third century BCE, predating the arrival of Arahat Mahinda. The stupa has been restored and expanded many times over the centuries by successive kings and donors, so the current structure reflects multiple layers of Sinhalese architectural history.
