Question 1

What is Iranawila famous for in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Iranawila is best known for the Iranawila Rajamaha Viharaya, a historically significant Buddhist temple that draws pilgrims from across the Puttalam District. The town is also recognised for its coconut cultivation, coastal lagoon scenery, and quiet, authentic rural atmosphere away from the main tourist trail.

Question 2

How far is Iranawila from Colombo?

Accepted Answer

Iranawila is roughly 80–90 km north of Colombo along the coastal A3 highway, typically a journey of around two hours by road depending on traffic. The drive from Negombo is considerably shorter, usually around one hour.

Question 3

What is the best time of year to visit Iranawila?

Accepted Answer

The period from December to March and again from May to September tends to offer drier, more settled conditions along this part of the northwest coast. Birdwatchers should aim for November to February when migratory birds are present around the lagoon systems.

Question 4

Can I visit the Iranawila Rajamaha Viharaya as a tourist?

Accepted Answer

Yes, the temple is generally open to respectful visitors. You should dress modestly with shoulders and knees covered, and remove your footwear before entering any shrine or sacred area. Photography is usually permitted in the grounds but should be approached with discretion inside the shrine rooms.

Question 5

Is there accommodation in Iranawila?

Accepted Answer

Iranawila itself has very limited accommodation options. The nearest towns with a wider range of guesthouses and hotels are Chilaw and Puttalam, both within reasonable driving distance. Most visitors treat Iranawila as a day excursion from Negombo or as part of a longer coastal road journey.

Question 6

What wildlife can I see near Iranawila?

Accepted Answer

The lagoon and coastal wetlands around Iranawila attract a variety of wading and migratory bird species, particularly between November and February. Monitor lizards are occasionally spotted near the lagoon edges. For larger wildlife including leopards and elephants, Wilpattu National Park lies roughly 60–70 km to the north.

Question 7

What other attractions are near Iranawila?

Accepted Answer

The Dutch Fort and fish market in Negombo lie to the south and make a strong pairing with an Iranawila visit. Heading north, Wilpattu National Park is the major nature attraction in the region. Travellers returning south can detour to the Madu Ganga mangrove wetland near Balapitiya for a boat safari through a UNESCO-listed ecosystem.
