Question 1

What is the best time to visit Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Sri Lanka has two monsoon seasons that affect different parts of the island at different times, which means there is rarely a single best month for the whole country. The south-west coast and hill country are driest from December through March, while the north and east coasts are best from May through September. Many travellers split their trip across regions to take advantage of the dry conditions wherever they are.

Question 2

How many days do I need to travel around Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

A minimum of ten to twelve days allows a meaningful circuit covering the Cultural Triangle, the hill country, and the southern coast without feeling rushed. Two weeks is more comfortable, and three weeks opens up the east coast, the far north, and slower exploration of individual regions. Shorter trips of five to seven days work well if the focus is kept to one or two zones rather than attempting a full circuit.

Question 3

Is Sri Lanka safe for tourists?

Accepted Answer

Sri Lanka is generally considered a safe destination for international travellers. Petty theft in busy markets and tourist areas is the most common concern, as it is in most travel destinations. The UK Foreign Office and US State Department both maintain current advisories, and checking these before travel is good practice for any destination.

Question 4

Do I need a visa to enter Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Most nationalities require an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before arrival, which is obtained online through the official Sri Lanka immigration portal. The standard tourist ETA allows a 30-day stay and is typically processed within 24 hours. A small number of nationalities are eligible for visa-on-arrival or visa-free entry; checking the official immigration website for the most current rules is recommended.

Question 5

What currency is used in Sri Lanka and can I pay by card?

Accepted Answer

The Sri Lankan Rupee (LKR) is the local currency. Major credit and debit cards are accepted at most hotels, larger restaurants, and tourist-oriented shops in cities and resort towns. Cash is more commonly needed at local markets, village guesthouses, and national park entry points, so carrying a reasonable amount of Rupees in smaller denominations is advisable when travelling outside urban areas.

Question 6

What vaccinations do I need for Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

No vaccinations are legally required for entry into Sri Lanka for most travellers, but several are recommended by travel health authorities, including Hepatitis A, Typhoid, and routine immunisations. Malaria prophylaxis may be advised for travel to certain rural areas, particularly in the north and east. A consultation with a travel health clinic or GP at least four to six weeks before departure is the safest approach.

Question 7

Can I see wild elephants in Sri Lanka without going on a jeep safari?

Accepted Answer

Yes, in several locations. The Elephant Transit Home near Udawalawe allows visitors to observe orphaned calves being fed without entering a national park. Elephants also roam freely around several ancient tank systems in the Cultural Triangle, and sightings near roadsides in rural areas are not uncommon in parts of the north-central province. A jeep safari remains the most reliable way to observe large herds in their natural behaviour.
