The Asgiriya Chapter is one of the two principal chapters of the Siyam Nikaya, the foremost Buddhist monastic order in Sri Lanka, alongside the Malwatta Chapter. It is based in Kandy, within the historic Asgiriya Maha Viharaya, which has served as a center of Buddhist learning, monastic training, and religious administration for centuries. The chapter was established in the 18th century, during efforts to revive the higher ordination (Upasampada) in Sri Lanka, ensuring the continuity of Theravada Buddhism in the country.
The Asgiriya Chapter has historically played a significant role in the religious, cultural, and social life of Sri Lanka. Its Mahanayaka Theras (chief monks) are highly respected for their guidance on spiritual, ethical, and educational matters. The chapter is actively involved in preserving Buddhist rituals, promoting monastic education, and maintaining traditional ceremonies. One of its most visible contributions is participation in the annual Esala Perahera in Kandy, a grand procession celebrating the Sacred Tooth Relic of the Buddha, highlighting the chapter’s integration of religion and culture.
Education and adherence to the Vinaya (monastic code) are central to the Asgiriya Chapter’s mission. Monks affiliated with the chapter engage in deep study of Buddhist scriptures, meditation, and community service. The chapter also oversees numerous temples and educational institutions across Sri Lanka, ensuring the training of future generations of monks and the continued spread of Buddhist teachings.
