Mannar Salt Pans

Mannar Salt Pans are expansive salt-producing fields located in the Mannar District of northwestern Sri Lanka. These salt pans play an important role in the country’s traditional salt industry, where seawater is channeled into shallow evaporation ponds to naturally produce salt under the sun.

The flat, open landscapes of the salt pans create a unique coastal environment that also supports birdlife and seasonal migratory species. During certain times of the year, flocks of flamingos and other water birds can be observed in the surrounding wetlands, adding ecological value to the area.

Visitors to the Mannar Salt Pans can witness the traditional process of salt harvesting, where workers collect crystallized salt from the dried beds. The geometric patterns of the ponds and the contrast of white salt against the blue sky make the site appealing for photography and cultural exploration.

The best time to visit the Mannar Salt Pans is during the dry season from May to September, when salt production is at its peak and weather conditions are clear. Easily accessible from Mannar town, the site offers insight into Sri Lanka's coastal livelihoods and natural salt-making traditions.
