Kandyan dance, Sri Lanka
Kandyan dance is the most widespread classical dance in Sri Lanka. Kandayan dance flourished under the patronage of the rulers of the kingdom of Kandy (1597--1815), in central Sri Lanka. Kandyan dance is characterized by a highly developed rhythmic system supported by drums and tiny cymbals. The elaborate costumes too have played its part in the formation of the distinctive style of classical dance in Sri Lanka.
