▶️The Life and Identity of Sir S. Siriwardena
Born in 1889 into a wealthy landowning family, Siriwardena was shaped by British education and Sri Lankan traditions. He balanced English social customs with Buddhist rituals, becoming a unique figure in colonial society. His life reflected cultural hybridity and ambition.

▶️Inspiration and Construction of the Castle
Inspired by a palace in India belonging to the Raja of Rammanandan, Siriwardena is believed to have copied its design. Construction began in the early 1900s and was completed in 1910. The castle featured 16 rooms, 99 doors, stained glass from Scotland, and Burmese teak carvings.

▶️A Stage for Social Grandeur
Richmond Castle was once a center of elite social life. It hosted royal guests, including the Prince and Princess of Wales. Visitors arrived by special trains, while horse-drawn carriages passed through its gates. Music, conversation, and celebration filled its halls.

▶️Marriage and Personal Struggles
At the age of 21, Siriwardena married Claris Matilda. Their marriage lasted 32 years but remained childless. Marble statues of children in the garden symbolize his unfulfilled desire for family, reflecting the private sorrow behind public splendor.

▶️Later Years and Philanthropic Legacy
In his later years, Siriwardena moved to Kandy, distancing himself from his grand creation. When he died in 1947, he donated Richmond Castle to the Public Trustee of Ceylon, requesting it be converted into a children’s home. This gesture reflected his compassion and lasting social vision.

▶️Richmond Castle Today: A Living Memoir
Today, Richmond Castle continues to reflect Siriwardena’s dreams and struggles. Its balconies and dance halls preserve memories of a remarkable life. The castle stands as both a monument and a memoir of ambition, cultural hybridity, and the quiet cost of legacy.
