▶️The Evolution of Galle Fort
Initially conceived by the Portuguese, the fort was fortified and expanded by the Dutch in 1640. They reinforced the fort with coral, stone, and granite, creating a massive structure with 14 defensive bastions, thick walls, and ramparts that still stand today. The fort evolved into a walled city of 52 hectares, incorporating public buildings, residential areas, and warehouses. The Dutch East India Company made Galle Fort a hub for spice trade, with cinnamon and pepper passing through its gates.

▶️The Iconic Lighthouse and Clock Tower
One of Galle Fort's most recognizable features is its lighthouse, built by the British in 1848. It remains Sri Lanka's oldest lighthouse, offering stunning views of the coastline. Another landmark, the clock tower built in 1883, stands as a testament to the British influence in the region. Both of these structures have become symbols of the fort and are important spots for tourists visiting the area.

Galle Fort’s architecture is a unique fusion of European styles with Asian influences. The fort’s walls and ramparts, originally built by the Portuguese and later fortified by the Dutch, still preserve Dutch Baroque and British colonial architectural elements. Within the fort, visitors can find churches, a Buddhist temple, and a mosque, reflecting the multicultural heritage of the region. The fort's design showcases a seamless blend of European structures with local materials, including terracotta-tiled roofs and stone buildings.

It hosts several events, including the popular Galle Literary Festival, and offers a range of accommodations, from boutique hotels to heritage properties. The fort also features the National Maritime Archaeology Museum, showcasing Sri Lanka’s maritime history and fishing techniques.
