Loolecondera Estate, located 35 km southeast of Kandy, is the birthplace of Ceylon Tea. Established in 1867 by Scottish planter James Taylor, it began as a 19-acre experimental plot. This single estate revolutionized the island's agriculture, saving the economy after the collapse of the coffee industry.Key Milestones1867: James Taylor plants the first commercial tea seeds on the estate (specifically in Field No. 7).1872: Taylor constructs Ceylon's first fully equipped tea factory and invents the first mechanical tea roller.1875: The first shipment of Ceylon tea (23 lbs) is successfully sent to the London Tea Auction.
