Dambulla Cave Temple, Sri Lanka
Dambulla Cave Temple is UNESCO World Heritage Site, is located 2km south of the city center. The temples are built into the caves atop an enormous granite outcrop that rises 160 km over the surrounding plains. The temples were built by King Valagambahu in the 2nd century B.C. The cave temples renovated by a several kings in the later stages is home to more than one hundred statues of Buddha, his disciples, deities and kings of Sri Lanka. The rock ceilings and rock walls are decorated with ancient and medieval murals of Sri Lanka.
