▶️The Origin of the Buddhist Flag
In the high peaks of the Himalayas and around Nepal, colorful Tibetan prayer flags have long been strung across trails. These flags, imprinted with mantras and prayers, were used to invoke good fortune and longevity. Originally, prayers of the Buddha were written on battle flags carried by Devas in their struggle against the Asuras. Over time, this tradition spread across the Buddhist world, eventually influencing the creation of the modern Buddhist flag in Sri Lanka in 1885.

▶️Symbolism of the Buddhist Flag
The Buddhist flag, designed by Colonel Henry Steel Olcott, was first hoisted on Vesak Day in 1885. The flag features five colors: blue, yellow, red, white, and orange, each symbolizing core Buddhist principles. The blue represents universal compassion, the yellow represents the middle path, and red symbolizes the blessings of Buddha’s teachings. White signifies the purity of dharma, and orange stands for the wisdom of the Buddha.

▶️The Buddhist Flag's Adoption and Spread
The flag’s design was modified to resemble national flags at the suggestion of Colonel Olcott, with the final version being adopted by Japan and Burma. In 1950, the World Fellowship of Buddhists officially recognized it as the universal flag of Buddhists worldwide. Today, the Buddhist flag is prominently displayed across temples, stupas, and homes to honor the Buddha’s teachings.

▶️The Role of the Buddhist Flag in Rituals
The Buddhist flag is integral to religious rituals across the Buddhist world. It serves as a reminder of the virtues taught by the Buddha, guiding devotees on the path to a better life. The flag is often strung across temples, stupas, and places of worship, where it becomes a focal point for offerings, prayers, and meditation. Flowers, incense, and the flag itself are used to honor the Buddha’s memory.
