▶️Introduction to the Evolution of Buddhist Image Houses
Buddhist temples and image houses in Sri Lanka have evolved over 2,500 years, and between the 17th and 19th centuries, a unique style of temple architecture emerged—the Tampita Vihara or Tempita image house. These distinctive structures, built on granite pillars, have been integral to the Buddhist culture in Sri Lanka. Today, only around 200 of these temples survive across the island.

▶️Devagiri Raja Maha Viharaya – History and Location
The Devagiri Raja Maha Viharaya is located 17.5 kilometers east of Chilaw, in the Bingiriya Graasa division of the Kuragala district. This area was historically known as Dhaki Nadesha. Ancient records reveal that the temple area was once a thriving agrarian enterprise, supported by large tanks and canals that provided irrigation. The remains of a thick boundary wall still mark the site.

▶️King Dwaniatisa and the Temple’s Origins
The ancient daraba (boundary wall) of the temple was reportedly constructed by King Dwaniatisa, following the advice of his brother, King Mahanaga. In the 18th century, during the reign of King Kitri Raja Singha of the Kandyan kingdom, the tempita vihara and other key buildings were erected, marking a significant architectural period for the temple.

▶️The Architectural Significance of Devagiri Raja Maha Viharaya
The temple is renowned for its impressive Tampita Vihara architecture, considered the largest of its kind in Sri Lanka. The main image house is supported by 22 monolithic stone pillars, each over 2 meters tall. These stone pillars, along with massive wooden beams and floorboards, support the upper structure. Intricate lotus and lion imagery adorn the pillars and trusses, giving the temple a unique aesthetic value.

▶️The Detailed Restoration of the Temple
The temple has undergone meticulous restoration by Sri Lanka’s Archaeology Department. Wooden beams, pillars, and floorboards have been preserved to maintain the authenticity and structural integrity of this remarkable Tampita architecture. The upper-level image house is accessed through an elaborately carved dragon’s arch, with standing and seated Buddha images decorating the space.
