▶️Tissamaharama: A Sacred Buddhist Landmark
Located in the southern part of Sri Lanka, Tissamaharama is home to four important stupas: the Tissamaharama Stupa, Yatala Vehera, Sandagiri Stupa, and Menik Vehera. These stupas, scattered around the Tissa Wewa tank, are significant religious and historical landmarks. Their strategic placement, architectural elegance, and association with important Buddhist relics make them central to Sri Lanka’s Buddhist pilgrimage circuit.

▶️The Tissamaharama Stupa: A Monument to Buddha’s Visit
The Tissamaharama Stupa is the largest stupa in southern Sri Lanka. Built to commemorate Lord Buddha’s visit and his meditation with 500 Arand monks, the stupa has undergone several renovations, the most notable being in the 1st, 3rd, and 11th centuries, and more recently in 1858. The stupa houses significant relics, including the Buddha's frontal bone and possibly his tooth relic, making it an essential site for Buddhist worshippers.

▶️The Yatala Vehera: An Ancient Stupa with a Moat
The Yatala Vehera, dating back to the 3rd century BCE, is located in Deera. This stupa is surrounded by a moat and embellished with sculpted elephant heads along its perimeter. Credited to King Yatala Tissa or his father, King Mahanaga, this site has undergone various restoration efforts since 1883 CE. The stupa features caskets and an image of Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva, making it a prime example of early Buddhist architecture and devotion.

▶️The Sandagiri Stupa: A Monument to King Mahanaga
Built by King Mahanaga in the 3rd century BCE, the Sandagiri Stupa is an integral part of an ancient monastery complex. It is located on an elevated area and features preserved stone artifacts, Buddha statues, and flower altars around its upper terrace. The stupa's dimensions, which are 18.3 meters in height and 103 meters in circumference, reflect its original grandeur. The stupa’s historical significance is reinforced by stone carvings of Buddha’s footprints.

▶️Menik Vehera: A Lesser-Known Stupa with Rich History
The Menik Vehera, a smaller stupa, is believed to have been constructed by either King Mahanaga or King Dutugemunu in the 3rd century BCE. Legend has it that King Dutugemunu’s elephant was tethered to a stone pillar at the site. Restored in 1894, the stupa continues to be a site of reverence for pilgrims making their way to Kataragama. Despite the ravages of time, valuable artifacts from the site have been lost or are in private collections.
