Jungle Beach by Uga is a boutique resort of thatched cabins at Kuchchaveli, north of Trincomalee, set in a 10-acre reserve between a 4 km beach and a lagoon. Known in full as Jungle Beach an Uga Experience, it hides its cabins among the mangroves and coastal jungle near Kuchchaveli, with a 20-metre pool under the canopy, a spa and a restaurant built around a living tree.
Every room is a free-standing cabin under a high thatched roof, and there are four kinds. The names below are the ones you will see when you book.
Each cabin takes up to three adults, or two adults with up to two children. All have air-conditioning, a ceiling fan, free Wi-Fi, a flat-screen TV, a minibar, an in-cabin safe, tea and coffee, a hair dryer, bathrobes and a pillow menu on request, and room service runs around the clock.
The main restaurant and bar sits in an open wooden structure under a thatched roof, with a huge tree growing up through its deck, which gives it the feel of a treehouse. It seats 75 and serves Sri Lankan recipes and Western dishes made with fresh local produce, from rice and curry to seafood platters made with the day's catch, and the bar serves cocktails and bar snacks. On the sand, the beach bar has an open kitchen, sea views and an à la carte menu of seafood, small plates and sandwiches. For a special occasion the resort can set up a meal in the jungle, a romantic picnic on the beach under the stars, or a beach barbecue with your own chef and waiter.
The 20-metre pool is surrounded by trees, and the beach in front of the resort runs for more than four kilometres. The lagoon behind is full of birds. There is a spa offering aromatherapy and beauty treatments, a fitness centre, bicycles on request for exploring Kuchchaveli, laundry and a doctor on call. Wi-Fi is free throughout, and some cabin categories are wheelchair accessible.
The resort arranges snorkelling and diving trips to Pigeon Island National Park, about eight nautical miles away, where more than 100 species of coral and 300 species of reef fish include blacktip reef sharks, rays and sea turtles. In season the waters off the coast are good for dolphin watching, and blue and sperm whales are seen too. Inland, the hilltop ruins of Girihandu Seya at Thiriyai, one of the oldest Buddhist stupas in Sri Lanka, have views over the countryside and the old port. Nilaveli Beach is about 15 minutes away. In and around Trincomalee, about half an hour south, are Koneswaram Temple on Swami Rock, Lover's Leap and the deep natural harbour, and the seven Kanniya hot springs are just north-west of the town.
The resort is about 254 kilometres by road from Bandaranaike International Airport, a drive of around five and a half hours; from Colombo it is 286 kilometres, about six hours. Sigiriya is about 120 kilometres or two hours away, so the resort combines easily with a tour of the Cultural Triangle. We can arrange a private car or van from the airport or from your previous hotel. Cinnamon Air also offers air transfers from the international airport for those short of time.
It suits couples and families who want a quiet, nature-led beach resort with real comfort, a long empty beach and good food, rather than a busy hotel strip. Three nights or more gives time for Pigeon Island, a whale or dolphin trip and lazy days by the pool.
