It was also home to China's first Western-style university, St. John's University, which cemented its position as a cultural hub. Since the end of the 19th century, the neighbourhood has also developed a thriving film culture: the first recorded screening of a motion picture in China took place here on August 11, 1896. The Hotel Indigo Shanghai Jing'An is located near Suzhou Creek, an area that was historically Shanghai's Chinese Settlement. Drawing inspiration from the neighbourhood's cinematic heritage, the hotel's design language is based on Shanghai's all-embracing Haipai culture.
