Ella Jungle Resort lies right along the banks of the Kirindi Oya at Karandagolla in Sri Lanka's Uva Province, spread across 150 acres of untouched tropical forest, crystal clear streams, rocky cliffs and waterfalls. Ella town is about 7.5 km away, with Ella Railway Station (7.8 km) and Heel Oya Station (7.1 km) the nearest stops on the hill-country line, the famous Ella Gap a few kilometres off, and Bandarawela about a 30-minute drive.
The resort is about 138 km as the crow flies from Bandaranaike International Airport at Katunayake, and the drive from the airport usually takes around 4.5 to 5 hours, depending on traffic and the weather. Book the Colombo (CMB) Airport transfer to Ella Jungle Resort.
Guests stay in eco lodges built in harmony with nature and with minimum impact on the setting, each with a river-front position, so you fall asleep and wake up to the sounds of the surrounding jungle. The lodges are comfortable and well equipped, and the resort suits true nature and adventure enthusiasts.
The restaurant seats around 50 guests at one sitting, but meals can also be taken privately at a location of your choice, and guests are encouraged to try each of the three meals somewhere different on the property. A speciality is the vegetarian BBQ, alongside a wide range of vegetarian dishes prepared mainly to traditional Sri Lankan recipes. Sitting areas and decks are scattered through the grounds, there is a campfire at night with live music, and yoga and meditation can be practised on site.
With experienced guides and trainers, guests can trek to nearby waterfalls, go rock climbing, paragliding and mountain biking through the jungle to a local village, and try high and low rope courses, zip lines, the monkey rope and a toddy tapper's walk, as well as harvesting wild bees' honey and ploughing paddy fields. Camping is available too. Further out, excursions reach Badulla and Bandarawela, the Dowa Temple, Dunhinda Falls, Ravana Falls and Lipton's Seat.
