▶️Kudumbigala – Ancient Monastery Among the Rocks

Accessible through Panama, the Kudumbigala Monastery Complex sits dramatically among rocky landscapes. A hike to the dagoba rewards visitors with spectacular views across Kumana National Park toward Okanda Beach. Numerous trails around the area also lead to ancient stone caves and dwellings once used centuries ago.

The area surrounding Panama contains archaeological evidence stretching back centuries, including rock inscriptions from the first and second centuries. Combined with ancient cave dwellings and religious sites, these remains reveal the historical importance of this remote corner of eastern Sri Lanka.

Panama remains primarily an agricultural village, with paddy cultivation forming an important part of local life and income. A smaller fishing community also lives here. The surrounding paddy fields, rural roads, and distinctive rolling sand dunes create a landscape unlike many other parts of Sri Lanka.

▶️Kumana – A Paradise for Birdlife

Panama is the gateway to the famous Kumana Bird Sanctuary. During the migratory season from approximately April to July, thousands of birds gather around its lakes and waterholes. More than 20 lagoons and lakes support this remarkable ecosystem, and the source notes that more than 255 species of birds have been recorded in Kumana National Park.
