Panama Ancient Coastal Village | Gateway to Kumana & Sri Lanka’s Wild East Coast
▶️Panama – An Ancient Coastal Village in Eastern Sri Lanka
Hidden along Sri Lanka’s remote east coast, Panama is an ancient coastal village where history, farming traditions, wildlife, beaches, and untouched landscapes come together. Located about 12 km beyond Arugam Bay, Panama is the last populated settlement in the southernmost part of Ampara District before the wilderness surrounding Yala and Kumana begins. Historical Portuguese and Dutch maps recorded the village under names including Panau, Panova, and Panime, reflecting its long history.

▶️Kudumbigala – Ancient Monastery Among the Rocks
Accessible through Panama, the Kudumbigala Monastery Complex sits dramatically among rocky landscapes. A hike to the dagoba rewards visitors with spectacular views across Kumana National Park toward Okanda Beach. Numerous trails around the area also lead to ancient stone caves and dwellings once used centuries ago.
▶️Ancient History Carved into Stone
The area surrounding Panama contains archaeological evidence stretching back centuries, including rock inscriptions from the first and second centuries. Combined with ancient cave dwellings and religious sites, these remains reveal the historical importance of this remote corner of eastern Sri Lanka.
▶️Traditional Village Life & Paddy Farming
Panama remains primarily an agricultural village, with paddy cultivation forming an important part of local life and income. A smaller fishing community also lives here. The surrounding paddy fields, rural roads, and distinctive rolling sand dunes create a landscape unlike many other parts of Sri Lanka.
▶️Kumana – A Paradise for Birdlife
Panama is the gateway to the famous Kumana Bird Sanctuary. During the migratory season from approximately April to July, thousands of birds gather around its lakes and waterholes. More than 20 lagoons and lakes support this remarkable ecosystem, and the source notes that more than 255 species of birds have been recorded in Kumana National Park.
▶️Culture, Faith and Pattini Worship
Panama is also known for the worship and veneration of Goddess Pattini, associated with chastity, rain, and fertility. Several shrines can be found around the village and sanctuary, reflecting religious traditions shared among different communities in Sri Lanka.
▶️Untouched Beaches & Beautiful Lagoons
Despite its remote location, Panama rewards visitors with an extraordinary combination of wildlife, culture, history, and coastal scenery. Panama Beach remains one of the scenic and relatively unspoiled stretches of Sri Lanka’s east coast, while the nearby lagoon offers spectacular evening views and peaceful natural surroundings.
