▶️A Monument Inspired by Kandyan Royal Architecture

The memorial hall was designed under the direction of Prime Minister D. S. Senanayake, Sri Lanka’s first Prime Minister. Its architecture was inspired by the Maguwa (Royal Audience Hall) of the Kandyan Kingdom, where the last Kandyan chiefs surrendered the kingdom to the British. The result is a stunning blend of traditional Kandyan design and modern national symbolism.

▶️A Hall Rich in History and Culture

The grand hall originally accommodated members of Parliament and the Senate during national ceremonies. Its walls feature artistic carvings and historical illustrations depicting important moments from Sri Lanka’s ancient history, creating an atmosphere that celebrates the island’s remarkable cultural legacy.

Standing proudly before the memorial is the bronze statue of Rt. Hon. D. S. Senanayake, widely known as the Father of the Nation. Surrounding the monument are impressive stone lions inspired by those of the ancient Yapahuwa Kingdom, symbolizing courage, strength, and sovereignty.

▶️More Than a Historic Monument

Today, Independence Square has become one of Colombo’s most popular public spaces. Beautiful gardens, fountains, walking paths, jogging tracks, and cycling routes make it a favorite destination for both locals and visitors. Beneath the monument lies the Independence Memorial Museum, where exhibits showcase Sri Lanka’s colonial history and its journey to independence.
