▶️Ecological Significance of Kanneliya
Kanneliya Forest Reserve plays a crucial role in protecting the headwaters of two rivers that run through the region. The forest is home to 38 fish species, including 20 endemic freshwater species, as well as a vast array of medicinal plants and woody plants, 41 of which are endemic to the area. This rich ecological diversity is what makes Kanneliya one of the most important protected areas in South Asia.

▶️Wildlife and Flora of Kanneliya
The forest reserve boasts an impressive variety of wildlife, including 36 species of snakes, 17 of which are endemic to the region. In addition, 23 species of lizards, such as the Sri Lankan kangaroo lizard, make Kanneliya their home. Bird watchers will delight in spotting endemic birds such as the Sri Lanka spurfowl, jungle fowl, and blue magpie as they traverse the dense cloud forest.
