About this experience
Board your private, air-conditioned vehicle at your Mount Lavinia hotel and head north towards Kitulgala, where dense jungle fringes the Kelani River. Your guide leads you on a hike through the forest to reach Belilena Cave — an archaeological reserve that sheltered some of Sri Lanka's earliest inhabitants. Inside, you examine fossils and skeletal remains dating back more than 10,000 years, including the celebrated bones of the "Balangoda Man", unearthed during excavations that changed the understanding of prehistoric South Asia. Entrance fees are covered, and a one-litre water bottle is provided per person.
The full tour runs nine hours and is entirely private, so the pace suits your group. Lunch is included, and your driver returns you to your hotel once the day is done. Children aged seven and above are welcome. Gratuities and any personal purchases are not included.
