For generations, Kandyan kings ruled from this mountain stronghold and resisted repeated foreign invasions. That era ended in 1815, when the Kandyan Convention was signed at the historic Magul Maduwa, transferring control of the kingdom to the British and bringing Sri Lanka’s long tradition of monarchy to an end.
