▶️A Sacred Site Shared by Many Faiths

Unlike most religious sites, Kataragama is revered by followers of multiple religions. Buddhists worship Kataragama Deviyo as a guardian deity, while Hindus honor him as Lord Murugan (Skanda or Kartikeya). The indigenous Vedda people have long revered the spirit of the mountain, and Muslims also regard the area as a place of spiritual significance.

▶️A History Dating Back Thousands of Years

Historical records, including the Mahavamsa, refer to the ancient settlement as Kajjaragama. The region was once an important trading center in the ancient Kingdom of Ruhuna, with archaeological discoveries revealing coins, pottery, and inscriptions that highlight its significance in Sri Lanka's early civilization.

▶️Kiri Vehera – One of Sri Lanka’s Holiest Stupas

Adjacent to the Kataragama shrine stands the magnificent Kiri Vehera, one of the Solosmasthana—the sixteen sacred Buddhist sites believed to have been visited by the Buddha. According to tradition, the Buddha preached the Dhamma here and encouraged people to abandon animal sacrifices, making Kiri Vehera an important destination for Buddhist pilgrims.

▶️The Legend of Lord Murugan

In Hindu tradition, Lord Murugan, the son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, is the deity worshipped at Kataragama. His peacock mount symbolizes the triumph over ego and worldly desires, while his six faces represent mastery over the senses and the pursuit of wisdom, courage, and spiritual perfection.

▶️The Famous Kataragama Esala Festival

Every year, thousands of devotees from across Sri Lanka and around the world gather for the spectacular Kataragama Esala Festival. The colorful procession features traditional dancers, drummers, elephants, fire-walking rituals, and acts of devotion that reflect centuries of living tradition and faith.
